FLO TV’s Personal Television Is Not Quite Ready for Prime Time

I like the idea of a portable TV, a handheld device that you can take with you wherever you are and watch the shows that you want, when you want. And I think that FLO TV is heading in that direction with its mobile TV network. But the company’s Personal Television, a dedicated mobile TV device, has to deliver a lot if it’s going to convince people to carry yet another device in their pockets. Right now, at least, the Personal Television isn’t convincing me that it’s worth its weight, as it suffers from reception that’s more a miss than a hit, a limited selection of content, and a price that’s just too [...]

Mobile Broadcast TV: New Options and New Headaches

Broadcasters are looking forward to the imminent availability of new mobile devices that can pick up broadcast television while on the move.

With broadcast TV viewing down over the past decade, broadcasters believe that they can grab additional viewers and increased ad sales with this new technology, which will let dedicated devices as well as smartphones receive live broadcast TV channels, even while traveling up to 160 miles per hour (don’t try this at home). In fact, the BIA/Kelsey research firm predicts that the mobile video advertising market could be worth more than $1 billion to broadcasters by [...]

Taking the next step in technology, WBNS 10TV has become the first station to deliver live broadcasts to mobile devices, 10TV’s Andy Hirsch reported Tuesday. [...]

Report: Consumers want local, mobile television

When it comes to consumers both inside and outside the large 3G networks, there is untapped potential for mobile marketers – if the video programming is there. A recent survey from Magid Media Labs found that mobile consumers want live, local mobile television. Many would even watch digital television feeds from a mobile [...]

Bmcoforum claims mobile TV progress

More countries have started commercial mobile broadcast TV services in 2009 or laid the basics for market offers in 2010, according to the bmcoforum.

In China, CMMB services started in 280 cities; a new DMB 2.0 service was taken into service in Korea; ISDB-T (1seg) was launched in Brazil and other South American countries; the widened FLO TV device spectrum and ATSC-M/H progress in the US and DVB-H services in five African countries; new DVB-H licences in the UAE, Poland and Moscow; and the DVB-SH hybrid satellite/terrestrial live network in Paris are some of the [...]

Broadcasters may have to pay extra for the right to deliver Mobile DTV

As a geek who just wants to enjoy gadgets, it can be very hard to understand the complicated spider web of media rights — it’s easily the kind of thing that puts one into an outrage when things like Hulu being pulled from Boxee happen. The problem is of course money, but this one is just too crazy, so we’ll spell it out for you. Lets say a broadcaster pays NBC for the exclusive right to broadcast the network’s signal in the Los Angeles area. [...]

Mobile TV Debuts in April with 30 Broadcast Stations

In April, 30 television stations in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle and Washington will begin broadcasting a signal that will allow a new class of mobile devices to show the stations’ programming, in a move that is a “game changer” for local broadcasters, according to Dennis Wharton of the National Association of Broadcasters. [...]

Mobile And Internet TV On The Rise, But Cable Not Leaving Anytime Soon

If you’ve been led to believe that Mobile TV and Web-based programming aren’t going anywhere fast, you’ve been lied to. If you’ve been led to believe that traditional TV viewing is rapidly declining, we’d also say that you’re off in the wrong direction. A new report stemming from Horowitz Associates’ annual Broadband Content and Services (BCS) survey has dug up some interesting conclusions about how people of today consume television content, and it definitely sheds light on both sides of [...]

3D TV, Mobile, and More at 2010 HPA Tech Retreat

A panel on mobile TV, which I moderated, considered the variety of ways that users can receive video programming on handheld devices. GOTV Networks Thomas Ellsworth talked about his company’s several-year experience in distributing video content to mobile devices, as Rubber Duck Media Lab’s Paul Childers described optimizing video for mobile content providers around the world. ATSC VP of Standards Development Jerry Whitaker explained the technological underpinnings of Mobile DTV and revealed that seven U.S. broadcast stations are already airing content on mobile devices. He estimates that 100 TV stations will be broadcasting to mobile by the end of 2010. [...]
