3D TV, Mobile, and More at 2010 HPA Tech Retreat

The Hollywood Post Alliance (HPA) held its 17th annual Tech Retreat in Rancho Mirage, CA, drawing executives, engineers and others to hear about the latest technologies in entertainment and media. Tech Retreat organizer Mark Schubin (pictured above) opened the proceedings with the pronouncement that 2010 is the 24th annual “This is the year of HDTV,” noting that only 63 percent of U.S. households have HDTVs, and that broadcasters are still using analog NTSC pool feeds, not to mention shooting and protecting for 4:3.

Mobile TVA panel on mobile TV, which I moderated, considered the variety of ways that users can receive video programming on handheld devices. GOTV Networks Thomas Ellsworth talked about his company’s several-year experience in distributing video content to mobile devices, as Rubber Duck Media Lab’s Paul Childers described optimizing video for mobile content providers around the world. ATSC VP of Standards Development Jerry Whitaker explained the technological underpinnings of Mobile DTV and revealed that seven U.S. broadcast stations are already airing content on mobile devices. He estimates that 100 TV stations will be broadcasting to mobile by the end of 2010.
